BMW Vision Root Coupé by Li Ding

The “BMW Vision Root Coupe” project merges the simplicity of retro design with the innovation of modern electric sports coupes. Drawing heavy inspiration from the iconic BMW 2002 Turbo, this concept demonstrates that creating a new look doesn’t require abandoning the past. In a world often cluttered with overdesign, simplicity can make a profound impact.

For the final design, the headlamp of the classic 2002 race car, with its distinctive “X”-shaped tape over the headlamp, serves as a key influence. This motif is reimagined as the main Daytime Running Lamp graphic, giving the vehicle a unique and recognizable identity. Complementing this, the traditional BMW double kidney grille is refined into two sleek vertical lines, presenting a clean, modern, and product-like front end. Below the grille lies a wide air flap, echoing the original 2002 design. These elements are precisely framed by a staple-shaped outer panel, which seamlessly transitions into the bodyside panel.

The bodyside features the quintessential sports coupe profile: a long hood, a dash-to-axle ratio, and a compact cabin. The bodyside’s section is pure, modern, and powerful, with the fenders pushed to their limits to achieve a striking coke-bottle shape. As the surface flows towards the rear, the bodyside is meticulously sculpted to mirror the staple shape of the front end, encapsulating rectangular taillights and double vertical lower brake lights that reflect the front’s kidney grille design.

The form language of the BMW Vision Root Coupe is characterized by pure and simple geometry. This design approach not only pays homage to the past but also infuses modernity through its details, creating a timeless and compelling aesthetic.
