The BMW CSi: Designed by Jang Hun Choi

The automotive world stands at the crossroads of nostalgia and innovation, and the BMW CSi exemplifies this blend perfectly. As an electric 4-door coupe, it masterfully combines the legacy of BMW’s “Competition Sports” (CS) models with the cutting-edge technology of their electric vehicle brand, “i.” Let’s explore how this design bridges the past and the future.

Reimagining the Side View

The BMW CSi’s silhouette is inspired by the iconic 3-box design of BMW cars from the 1970s and 1980s. This classic proportion exudes timeless elegance while being meticulously reworked to avoid an overly retro appearance. A defining feature is the continuous line running from the hood, subtly fading over the rear wheel, giving the coupe a seamless flow. The lower body naturally shapes itself with modern volume, achieving both dynamism and sophistication.

Front Design: A Modern Shark Nose Tribute

At the front, the legendary kidney grille undergoes a transformation. Positioned closer to the bumper, the grille serves a functional purpose for the electric powertrain, aligning with the Bauhaus principle of “form follows function.” The cooling intake is strategically placed in the lower section, allowing space for a striking wide DRL (Daytime Running Light). This DRL echoes the elongated front of the classic BMW 3.0 CSI and bends inward to honour the renowned “shark nose” aesthetic. The result is a harmonious fusion of modern utility and classic styling.

Tail Lamps: Echoing the Front’s Elegance

The tail lamp design mirrors the front DRL, creating a balanced visual connection between the car’s ends. Crafted with a three-dimensional lens area, the lights add depth and futuristic appeal while maintaining an understated elegance. This design choice reinforces the CSi’s identity as a car that respects its roots while embracing tomorrow.

Retro-Inspired Wheels with a Twist

The wheels of the BMW CSi pay homage to the turbo fan wheels seen in 1980s race cars. These designs were not only functional but also carried a distinctive aesthetic. By reimagining them with modern materials and technology, the CSi captures the racing spirit of its predecessors, offering a retro feel that complements its electric innovation.

A Fusion of Classic and Modern Engineering

The BMW CSi is more than just a car—it’s a statement of how tradition and innovation can coexist. By marrying classic BMW design elements with state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology, the CSi redefines what it means to honor the past while moving boldly into the future.

This visionary design, crafted by Jang Hun Choi, encapsulates the timeless BMW spirit while embracing the technological advancements of the electric age. The BMW CSi isn’t just a car; it’s a legacy reimagined.
